The Meanings of Mercedes Salazar
Mercedes Salazars designs use traditional hand crafted techniques using unusual materials, they are apparently meant to 'connect you to the Universe' in the words of the designer herself. Mercedes was born on June 17th 1975 in Bogota, Columbia, she attended the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes Craftwork School in Mexico, where her talent for jewellery design was nutured, she believes in opposites, the balance between lightness and weight, roundness and squareness, to her these opposites are fundamental to each design.
Inspiration is taken from everyday life, she aims to turn those seconds and words into jewels, maybe this is through each piece having a meaning behind it? And this is what actually drew me to these designs. She spends her whole day with her artisans creating jewels, exploring and retreiving ancient techniques, the never ending search for her own roots is the main nourishment of her spirit, her designs are refined and subtle and they reflect her admiration for hand-made jewellery. Her company was created eight years ago with its head quarters based in Columbia, her successful story is represented by now having stockists all over the world.
